23 million Tweeters are bots

This week, Twitter revealed that 23 million of its 271 million monthly active users are actually bots - essentially computer programmes that tweet of their own accord without human help. What does this mean for advertising?

This week, Twitter revealed that 23 million of its 271 million monthly active users are actually bots – essentially computer programmes that tweet of their own accord without human help.

Don’t get confused with spammers though: Tweet-bots, of which there are 23 million, Tweet robotically, and spam accounts, which only account for less than 5%,  create multiple accounts, either manually or using automated tools.

Bots are useful, even essential, accounts for a large number of Twitter users. However, once they’re set up, they don’t usually have any humans behind them, which matters greatly to advertisers who are interested in reaching potential customers.
