5 examples of burgeoning beacon technology

As technology evolves and becomes further integrated into our lives, interconnectivity is emitting a new marketing opportunity – the iBeacon.

Sophisticated software sits comfortably in our pockets whilst we browse the aisles of stores  – unlocking new opportunities for marketers to interact with shoppers in a different more location-specific way.

The positioning nature of the iBeacon software means the tech can target customers at different points of entry throughout stores, which could make experiences more responsive and less 2-D.

Here are five examples of how iBeacon is being used at the moment:

1. Major League Baseball

MLB in the US has crafted an app to give fans access to tailor-made offers, information about facilities, video clips and more.

2. Macy’s

The iconic US department store, Macy’s, has been testing the new iBeacon software – customers with the Shopkick app installed on their iPhone device will be alerted about tantalising offers.

3. Apple

The founding fruit of iBeacon, Apple, has switched on the tech across its 254 US stores to be used in conjunction with the company’s Apple Store app. Functions will include notifications for when orders are assembled as well as reminders for phone upgrades when you’re in the relevant section of the store.

4. CES scavenger hunt

The idea of a ‘scavenger hunt’ was trialled at CES where attendee’s were encouraged to explore the event for a prize win.

5. American Eagle Outfitters 

Using the Shopkick app, customers receive details of location-specific deals, it gives the shopper the opportunity to tag products on the app, they will receive reminders to search for the product – and perhaps direct them to its location.
