Facebook has finally arrived at the GIF-party, now letting users enjoy the moving pictures in their news feed.
Users can paste a link to a GIF hosted on another site – such as Imgur – and it will show up as a moving animated pic.
Normally ahead of the game, social media companies have been slow to integrate GIFs into users’ online environment, despite their overwhelming popularity.
Twitter currently transforms GIFs into videos to get them on the site.
The move could mean big things for marketers in the attention economy, where it’s ever tougher to capture someone’s attention for more than a minute or two.
The animated GIF can also be used to guide the viewer’s eye along a specific path without being obtrusive and can be subtle call to action that brightens up a users’ feed.
Watch out marketers, Facebook’s got a new toy.
