UK consumers have complained of Apple’s pricing plan to access its new music service, which charges customers a hefty premium.

Apple Music will be made available for £9.99 a month in the UK, a 55 per cent premium over the identical service in the US which costs just $9.99 (£6.46) – without factoring in sales tax. Apple is now under fire as reports say that a blanket 9.99 pricing plan effectively penalises British consumers over those in Europe and the US once exchange rates are factored in.

James Walker, founder of consumer complaints website Resolver, warned there was little people could do short of buying abroad. He said: “Technology companies find it quite easy to make a cash cow of the UK. The cost of sales here isn’t really any different to the US. But rather than doing what’s fair for the consumer, they charge what they can get away with. This is exactly why Brits try to buy Apple hardware when they go on holiday in the States. The difference can be enormous.”
