AdBrite lays off 40 percent; MEC promotes as Schanzer heads to Undertone; Glam gets Recht; Heavy hires

AdBrite laid off 40 of its 100 people to prepare for the coming economic chill. Departing figures include two senior execs: VP Marketing Paul Levine and VP Finance Bob Feller.

MEC Interaction has appointed Patrick Cartmel as managing director, Digital Operations, and Carrie Frolich as managing director, Digital Media. The pair will assume their new roles immediately, replacing Alan Schanzer who has left the agency, and reporting into Lee Doyle, CEO of parent company Mediaedge:cia. Schanzer is set to start his role as chief strategy officer at online ad network Undertone Networks on Monday.

Glam Media has appointed Stephen Recht as CFO. He replaces the firm’s co-founder, Ernie Cicogna, who will take on a broader role as EVP of Glam Partners and GM of the Glam Publisher Network. Recht joins from Shutterfly Inc, where he also held the position of CFO; he will now report directly to chairman and CEO Samir Arora.

Independent video site Heavy.com has hired Matthew Pennington to head up its U.K. operation. Pennington will be responsible for U.K. ad sales and revenue generation, and joins the company from talkSPORT, where he held the position of sales director.

HC&B Healthcare Communications has hired Margaret Udell as senior interactive producer in the company’s recently launched interactive division, HC&B Digital. Udell will be responsible for managing all aspects of the agency’s interactive programs, including creative, development and client service, reporting to SVP, Chief Strategist.Lloyd Sheep,

Digital marketing agency Wiredset has partnered with publisher William Morrow to launch a widget promoting the latest novel from Neal Stephenson, titled “Anathem World.” The widget, which contains six exclusive videos of Stephenson discussing the book, is an extension of an online engagement campaign that kicked off prior to its release on September 9th.
