Bay Area search firm adds to grim tally of digital agencies slashing positions.
Bay Area search agency Efficient Frontier has laid off numerous employees, including in its account services and sales departments.
According to people familiar with the company, the layoffs do not appear related to the loss of a particular client. Rather, they say Efficient Frontier may have overstaffed following a hiring spree that started last year.
ClickZ was not able to confirm the exact number of layoffs, and Efficient Frontier declined to comment for this story. However the agency cut at least six employees in its Sunnyvale, CA headquarters, according to one source.
In a statement, the privately-held agency noted it employs over 200 people globally and manages above $750 million in spending, and it claimed its business has grown faster than the search marketing category as a whole.
“We expect it to continue to do so,” the statement said.
Efficient Frontier joins a growing pack of interactive agencies and technology firms that are shedding employees as the economic picture deteriorates. Last week Razorfish eliminated 50 jobs in its New York office, and Dallas-based IMC2 and New York-based Inform Technologies have also let people go.
