Quote of the Day: Commercial Defamation 2.0

"The Internet is a culture of rights rather than responsibilities

“The Internet is a culture of rights rather than responsibilities. We have no coherent theory of digital responsibility. The issue has broken through, broken out of Silicon Valley – now it affects real people with real reputations to defend.”

-Andrew Keen, author of “The Cult of the Amateur: How Today’s Internet is Killing Our Culture,” quoted in a San Francisco Chronicle write-up of the recent spate of anti-defamation lawsuits against online commenters. Controversy and lawsuits over online speech have climbed sharply of late. Last week saw the shut-down of JuicyCampus, a site that has been scrutinized for harboring defamatory content; and a pediatric dentist in the Bay Area recently sued a Los Altos couple for false criticisms posted in a Yelp review.
