Amazon could land aerial drone testing in the US in favour of UK skies after growing outdoor flying restrictions.
In a letter to the FSA Paul Misener, Amazon’s vice-president of global public policy, wrote: “Without the ability to test outdoors in the United States soon, we will have no choice but to divert even more of our [drone] research and development resources abroad.”
Following the e-tailer’s recent call for pilots at its UK-based (Cambridge) research office, there is growing speculation that the online giant could move its operations to the UK, where it is already testing its airborne delivery service.
‘Prime Air’ has been developed in the US, but the country’s aviation authority – the Federal Aviation Administration – has thwarted previous requests to expand its development programme.
In Britain the Civil Aviation Authority bans drones from flying within 150m of built-up areas but has ‘no established operating guidelines’ for their use.
