Apple Pay Coming to UK Retail Stores from July

Apple Pay has the support and backing of many popular stores in the U.K. as well as eight banks.

Apple will bring its contactless payment system to the U.K. from next month, allowing users to simply place their iPhone near a sales point to make a purchase.

Apple Pay has been expected in the U.K. for some time, but no fixed date had been set. This was answered at Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference where the July rollout was promised and the supporting retail outlets announced.

The service has been adopted by “millions” already, according to the firm, and it expects that the same will happen in the U.K. with strong support from retaliers and the backing of eight banks.

“Apple Pay has quickly become a big part of millions of users’ everyday shopping routines, providing a simpler, faster and more secure way to pay,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of internet software and services.

“We’re thrilled to bring Apple Pay to the U.K. with support at launch from the most popular banks, an incredible roster of merchants and many of our users’ favourite apps.”

Some 250,000 locations will support Apple Pay at launch, including Pret a Manger, Marks & Spencer and Transport for London. Banks and the major credit and debit card companies are onboard, including RBS, American Express, MasterCard and Visa Europe.

“As part of our goal to be number one, we are absolutely focused on giving our customers the best and most innovative experience possible,” said Ross McEwan, chief executive at RBS.

“Whether on the high street, in a small shop or on the go within apps, Apple Pay offers a simple and secure way to pay. We are pleased to be among the first U.K. banks to offer this service to our customers.”

Marks & Spencer chief executive Mark Bolland was equally effusive. “We are proud to be one of the first retailers to introduce Apple Pay at our stores across the U.K.,” he said.

“Whether customers are enjoying our special food range or our clothing collections, our early introduction of Apple Pay will provide them with a seamless and secure way of checking out.”
