Barclays has teamed up with Twitter to allow users of its Pingit payment app to send payment using the social network’s handles.
Pingit launched in 2012, allowing British banking customers to send and receive mobile payments using just mobile phone numbers.
Users will be able to link their Twitter usernames to the service from March 10th, and send money to family, friends or small businesses that have also signed up with Twitter and Pingit.
The app, which is also open to users who don’t bank with Barclays, has dealt with £1 billion in transfers since its launch.
“We are always on the lookout for new and exciting ways to make people’s lives easier and customer feedback plays a big part in how we chose to further develop our apps,” said Darren Foulds, Barclays’ director of mobile banking and Pingit. “Adding the ability to pay people or a small business using just a Twitter handle brings together a social and digital experience to create a new step forward for mobile payments in the UK.”
