The £12.5bn BT takeover of EE will take mobile web access to “that next level” in the UK, says the head of EE.
Olaf Swantee, EE chief executive was confident that BT’s takeover of the company would “unleash” the potential of 5G.
Swantee said: “We were able to unleash an investment programme that brought the UK from laggard to leader, the UK was way behind other markets in terms of its mobile network infrastructure, but today we are ahead of the curve and ahead of many markets.”
In the interview with Mobile World Live, Swantee was quick to play down the fears from many surrounding the merger, highlighting the success of the Orange Group and Deutsche Telekom marriage that formed EE, the UK’s largest mobile network.
Swantee said that he saw a “long road map” for 4G, adding that “it will be a long time before we will see the need for higher speeds”
