Facebook has declared war on the popular perishable photo-sharing app Snapchat, announcing a rival video-chat app known as Slingshot.
It is rumoured that Facebook has been developing the competitive tool for several months – to combat the growing migration of younger users to other social tools.
Previous attempts to compete with Shapchat failed, after Facebook’s first attempt called ‘Poke’ failed miserably, as did Facebook’s $3bn buyout attempt of the tool.
The popularity of Snapchat has continued to climb, with a Pew Research Center study estimating that 9% of adult mobile phone owners in the US use the app.
Slingshot’s user interface is said to resemble new video-messaging app TapTalk, allowing messages to be sent instantly with only a couple of taps of the screen – estimates suggest that the feature could be rolled out within the next month.
It remains to be seen if Facebook’s diversification programme can alleviate its growing user migration and keep users active within the tool.
