Coinciding with its announcement that it might be introducing a dislike button, Facebook is now testing read receipts for event invitations. Could this be a useful tool for event planning and promotion, or a risky feature that could affect friendships online?
The pilot scheme means that Facebook friends might now struggle to say that they didn’t notice an event notification.
Similar to the memo that shows when somebody has read something on Facebook messenger, the new feature will reveal whether a person has “seen” a Facebook invitation. It will also enable event hosts to see who has read updates published on the event page.
It has been reported that Facebook hopes the feature will be able to let people know whether an event invite has arrived.
A spokesperson for Facebook said to the Daily Dot, “We’re piloting the ability for private event hosts and guests to know whether their friends they invited have seen the event.”
The new tool is currently only being tested on select users, which means it may never be fully implemented to the general public.
