Facebook is reportedly in “alpha” stage testing of a new standalone mobile news app. The product – part of the ‘Facebook for Business’ initiative – would be a broadcast-only experience, allowing users to follow specific topics and receive alerts when a breaking news event occurs.
The news shows Facebook’s plans to follow in the footsteps of Twitter – an app generally perceived to have a strong lead in breaking news.
If Facebook’s breaking news app proves successful in its testing stage, it would be the latest addition to the site’s growing portfolio of apps. As well as the main Facebook app, the company also produces Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
