The release of ZenithOptimedia’s Top Thirty Global Media Owners report has revealed that Google is now the world’s largest media owner, boasting 39% more media revenues than its closest competitor, DirecTV.
Interesting stats within the report highlight that the internet media owners included on the list of 30 giants (Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo!) generated a total of US$49.2bn in revenue from internet advertising in 2011, a significant chunk of the total US$77bn spent on internet advertising around the world.
On its own, Google accounted for 49% of the world’s internet ad spend. Quite a far way behind was Yahoo! with 6% and Microsoft and Facebook on 4% respectively.
Head of forecasting at ZenithOptimedia, Jonathan Barnard, commented: ‘Google’s position as the number one global media owner is testament not only to its strength in search, but also to its expansion in other key digital platforms.
“ZenithOptimedia’s top 30 ranking now includes four digital media owners, and we expect there to be at least one more next year.”
