Google’s solar-powered drone programme, Project Titan, will send its first fleet into the sky this year, according to an announcement by the company’s senior VP who took to the stage at Mobile World Congress this week.
Sundar Pichai outlined how the project aims to connect 4 billion people currently without Internet access. Project Titan will fly lightweight solar-powered airplanes to serve as remote satellites, and Google will use the drones to hover above certain areas and supply connectivity to locations below.
Pichai also discussed Project Loon, which involves sending balloons into the sky to serve as floating cell towers, but covering greater regions from above, rather than more on specific, narrower areas like Titan. Google’s third program is called Project Blank, a fiber network, which aims to bring connectivity to rural and urban areas across the world.
“We built a fiber network and worked with local providers to provide 4G services,” Pichai said. “We are going to roll out Project Plank to Africa this year.”
