The gloriously gloomy “Grumpy Cat” has amassed a whopping £64m ($100m) since her first social post, claims the Express.
In just two years, Grumpy Cat – real name Tardar Source – has clawed in a mountain of gold from a range of products, bestselling books and a film.
With the cats success rooted in social, its owner, Tabatha Bundesen of Morristown, Arizona, USA, believes her pet is “unstoppable”.
“I was able to quit my job as a waitress within days of her first appearance on social media and the phone simply hasn’t stopped ringing since.”
The cat’s relentless frown of discontent was the magical ingredient behind the feline’s social success, with Tardar’s permanent scowl attracting 521,000 followers on Instagram and 255,000 on Twitter – a remarkable marketing proposition.
Born with a defect, the cat’s disgruntled appearance is a result of her being born with dwarfism and an underbite.
Since its owner’s brother posted a snap of the cat online, she became an internet superstar –with her fame boosted by Ben Lashes – an “Internet cat “ agent who saw her adorn the covers of the Wall Street Journal and New York Magazine.
Whether the reports are entirely accurate or not, what’s clear is the power and scope that social platforms have to establish brands and earn cold hard cash.
