The new Instagram Direct service allows users to privately send their chosen pics or videos to up to 15 friends in one go, but critics are calling it ‘pointless’ due to the wealth of direct messaging apps already available, such as Snapchat, Facebook Messenger, Twitter DMs, iMessage and BlackBerry Messenger.
Instagram explained that the new service will allow users to share moments privately, such as an “inside joke between friends captured on the go, a special family moment or even just one more photo of your new puppy”, and will help jazz up direct messages by providing photo accompaniments.
Experts at TechRadar have deemed the service ‘unoriginal’, explaining that ‘Instagram’s entrance into the DM space feels very late and perhaps even pointless‘. However, they agree that the move into messaging will allow the app to become an even bigger competitor in the social media app space, and will help ensure that its 150 million users, half of whom use the service every day, become increasingly reliant on the service for keeping in direct contact with friends.
Gizmodo agreed, saying the service was the “logical next step for Instagram… [allowing it] to act as an extension of Facebook”.
