It's finally happening: Soundcloud is introducing adverts

To many music lovers' dismay, and the rejoice of brands, Soundcloud will be introducing adverts to their service.

SoundCloud is an online music service used by millions, which is currently “unadulterated” by adverts. To many music lovers’ dismay, and the rejoice of brands, not for much longer. The company has revealed plans to introduce advertising, with artists and labels to apparently collect royalties for the first time.

Advertisements from companies like Red Bull will run alongside licensed content on the site, as part of a new licensing deal SoundCloud has signed with entertainment companies, including music publishers Sony/ATV and BMG. SoundCloud’s chief business officer Jeff Toig told The New York Times that most of the ad revenue will go to the content provider. The company plans to have an advert-skipping subscription, which will cost the user.
