Ryanair has announced that it is testing a new in-flight and ad-funded digital service that will allow the airline to send films direct to users, tablets and smartphones. The airline will also start trialling a wi-fi service later this year.
It’s worth noting that passengers will need to use their own devices to watch the films – Ryanair won’t be installing screens. The streaming service will offer TV shows and films, and won’t enable passengers to use the internet. If the service is well received by customers, it could could be a permanent fixture.
The airline is not the first to test a streaming service. Rivals like Southwest Airlines and Jetstar already have already provided the service to devices on some routes in North America.
Qantas, Virgin Australia and Singapore Airlines’ Scoot offshoot also offer a streaming service of their own, making it possible for customers to choose from a larger than normal selection of entertainment.
