A report by the Commons Science and Technology Select Committee says social network platforms like Facebook and Twitter’s terms and conditions are far too long and complex, and should be simplified.
MPs say not only are users probably unaware of how their details can be used by websites, but also reading and understanding documents about terms is like “engaging with Shakespeare”.The committee says that the rules have been designed for use in US courtrooms and to protect organisations in the event of legal action rather than to convey information.
The Chairman of the Committee, Andrew Miller MP, used the example of the Facebook experiment this year, which manipulated users’ emotions by varying the stories they saw in their newsfeeds.
