Sony Pictures Animations – following a bidding war with other companies – has forked out a seven figure sum for the rights to turn emoji icons into animated films.

The studio plans to make a feature film about the smiley, winky, and unhappy cartoon characters, reports claim.

The project will be co-written by Eric Siegel and Anthony Leondis, according to reports, the latter of whom pitched the idea.

‘Three studios bid,’ Mike Fleming of Deadline said. ‘I’ve heard Warner Bros and Paramount were the others, but none more aggressively than Sony.’

This comes after the announcement that a company was working on the world’s first emoji-only passcodes.
