After all the hype surrounding Google Glass, it has been given a low-key launch in the UK this week. Prototypes of the Android-enabled spectacles can be purchased for GBP1000 by developers. The UK is the only country, apart from the US, in which the device has been made available to developers so far.
As a result, The Guardian is among one of the first to integrate its platform into the piece of glassware. It has utilised the unique functionality of the device enabling it to stream the latest weather, headlines and breaking news to the wearer. Additionally, users will be able to hear short audio summaries of content which can be saved for later perusal. Content can also easily be shared across social channels such as Twitter and Facebook.
Although The Guardian is amongst the first organisations to create Glassware for the UK Explorer launch but others, such as Tesco, are expected to follow suit.
Alan Rusbridger, editor-in-chief, Guardian News and Media said:
“The Guardian’s philosophy and approach to journalism is independent of any platform. What intrigues us most about Google Glass and other wearable devices are the new journalistic opportunities they provide, and how they allow us to collaborate with our readers around the world while respecting their privacy.”
