Yesterday Twitter unveiled a “news” tab on the US version of its app. The trending news tab will link to a list of the latest news stories and discussions.
The experimental feature arrives ahead of Twitter’s upcoming Project Lightning, which will let users follow events live through curated timelines of tweets, pictures and videos.
The “trending news” feature appears on the middle tab of the app’s navigation bar. When you click on a headline, Twitter brings up the story’s content – an image, headline, text from the story and the top tweets discussing it.
“We’re experimenting with a news experience on iOS and Android as we continue to explore new ways to surface the best content to users,” a Twitter spokesperson said in a statement.
Buzzfeed said that the news tab could “lower Twitter’s barrier to entry” by making the best content easier to find, as there are still many who find the platform confusing.
