Twitter is allegedly building a new product that – unlike services such as OneShot which tweet out blocks of texts as an image – will allow users to publish long form content.
The company’s character limit has been criticised over the years, with many arguing that Twitter should develop and expand it. According to some reports, Twitter has also discussed changing the way characters are measured, including removing links and user handles from the 140 character count.
Twitter added a “retweet with comment” option in April to give people more room to comment on tweets they share and the company also lifted the 140-character rule on private messages back in June.
CEO Dorsey wants to reach a more mainstream audience. Tweaking the character count or allowing for longer tweets is a good way to do this. Once Twitter attracts more engaged users, the platform will benefit from brands wanting to advertise.
