Twitter records £86m loss despite user growth

A large surface area doesn’t seem to be speeding up Twitter’s digestion of profits – as their latest set of financial results record an £86m loss, yet a 24% increase in users since last year.

A large surface area doesn’t seem to be speeding up Twitter’s digestion of profits – as their latest set of financial results record an £86m loss, yet a 24% increase in users since last year.

Covering the second quarter from March to June, Twitter’s profits fell whilst users grew by 16m during the same period.

The boost in users is largely credited to the hysteria drummed up throughout the World Cup as Twitter became the epicentre of all things football.

The social tools monthly users now total up from 271m.

The latest results hit is more than three times what Twitter reported over the same period last year – giving investors cause for concern.

However all is not blue for Twitter, as shares rose by 35% with ad revenue growing to a healthy $277m fuelled by mobile activity.

Twitter chief Dick Costolo said in a statement: “Our strong financial and operating results for the second quarter show the continued momentum of our business.”
