Opening the globally popular messaging service to your desktop, the apps 700m users will be able to connect with mobile conversations via desktop – but it must be linked to the phone app via QR security code.
Currently the option is only available to Android, Windows and BlackBerry, much to the revulsion of the iPhone troop.
WhatsApp founder Jan Koum wrote in a Facebook post: “The web browser mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device.
“This means all of your messages still live on your phone.
“Unfortunately for now, we will not be able to provide web client to our iOS users due to Apple platform limitations.”
To install the service, users have to visit http://web.whatsapp.com in a Google Chrome browser.
A QR code appears which must be scanned using the WhatsApp software.
The news comes as WhatsApp attempts to whittle down users who access the service via third-party apps.
