An additional half a billion people have connected to the internet for the first time over the past year, a new report has found.

An additional half a billion people have connected to the internet for the first time over the past year, a new report has found.

The surge of people getting online has increased the total number of internet users by 20%.

The research from Wearesocial also highlighted a social swell, with usage increasing 12% year-on-year and mobile use which increased by 23% over the same period.

Surveying 240 countries, the report also found that more than half of the world’s population own a mobile phone, after 185m people purchased devices since January last year – bringing the global total to 3.65bn.
