Troubled supermarket giant Tesco is reportedly in discussions to sell off Blinkbox – the video streaming service – in order to refocus its commercial strategy.
The service, designed to compete with the likes of Amazon’s LoveFilm and Netflix, was acquired just three years ago.
It is understood that Dave Lewis, Tesco’s new chief executive intends to seek a new buyer after streamlining the company’s strategy. If a buyer cannot be found it is likely the streaming service will face closure.
Blinkbox offers over 10,000 TV shows and films and is available on a range of digital devices with content licensing deals with partners including BBC Worldwide, Channel 4 and film studios such as Fox and Universal.
The poor performance comes as market leaders, Netflix continue to dominate the TV streaming world, and other companies such as Spotify dominate the music streaming market.
