Google is inventing new ways to expand its gold-laden coffers by offering web browsers the chance to read advert-free versions of popular sites, in return for a fee.
Browsers can scroll some of their favourite sites free from ads in exchange for a monthly subscription fee of between $1 and $3.
Site such as the Mashable, The Onion and WikiHow have signed up to the invitation-only programme – known as Contributor.
The “experimental” system is compatible with all major browsers and mobile apps, with Google claiming that this is a way for the search giant to decrease its dependency on ad revenues.
The ad blocker will strip embedded promotions from participating sites, replacing them with a simple ‘Thank-you’ message. Participating sites and Google will split revenue generated by the scheme.
