A digital guide to Glastonbury 2014: 5 essential apps

Download these 5 apps to make your Glastonbury experience even better (or at least make it look like you're having a good time even if you're shivering in a rain soaked tent with a warm beer).

There was once a time when Glastonbury existed as a model for UK counter-culture; a realised utopic vision that inspired an ethos of communality. During this time, Glastonbury-goers had to bring actual possessions, even if they were just a bongo drum and bangle. From the ashes of peace and love gone wrong, generation Y were born, changing the festival experience forever with relentless Instagramming, the ability to stream Skream & Benga on Soundcloud, and the desire to check-in to portaloos on Facebook.

Digital is now an integral part of attending a festival, and probably more important than the stuff you bring, so there is literally no point in going to Glastonbury 2014 unless your download these 5 apps:

1. Instagram

Instagram is essential, because it’s important to show everyone how much of a good time you’re having, even if you aren’t. Filters will hide how tired you are (I recommend Walden), and you can upload your photos to various social platforms including Facebook and Twitter, so that everyone at work knows exactly what you’re drinking, eating, wearing etc. Instagram installed a video option shortly after everyone started using Vine, so you can also video you and your friends pre-lashing.

2. Festival Ready

Festival Ready is an app that will help you find your tent, check the weather, turn your phone into a torch, and get a check list of things to bring. That’s right, there is no need to bring an actual torch, or use your own memory to locate your tent. Download this if you are the kind of person that enjoys organised fun.

3. EE’S official Glastonbury 2014

Glaso is about the music, right? Wrong – everyone just ends up sitting around their camp site, which would be £200 cheaper if it were anywhere else. However, our advice is to make a list of the music you want to see anyway, on the official Glastonbury 2014 app. This year’s version apparently has a better map, a better news section and a comprehensive line-up section, and there is also an interactive 2014 programme. All proceeds go to the festival’s charities – Oxfam, Wateraid and Greenpeace.

4. GroupMe

Nobody goes to Glastonbury without at least 15 friends. As a consequence, many phone conversations proceed as follows: “I’M BY THE RED BIN, CAN YOU SEE ME? NEXT TO THE FALAFEL TENT?”, and so about 7 hours a day is wasted trying to find the large group of people that you came with. GroupMe allows you to share your location and create group chats so you don’t lose touch or track of one another at any stage.

5. Natwest Online Banking

It’s tempting to offer to buy all of your friends drinks during a fleeting euphoric moment. Set up alerts on your online banking app that track what you’re spending to prevent this from happening. None of them will remember or appreciate your gesture.
