It’s no surprise that Claire McCaskill, Democratic Senator from Missouri, is attempting to capitalize on her opponent’s major gaffe with the help of Twitter ads. What may come as more of a surprise: Todd Akin’s campaign is aiming to generate fundraising support following calls for him to drop out of the race.
“Akin Isn’t Dropping Out,” reads a Google ad that appears in search results for “Todd Akin.” The ad encourages people to “Show your support for Todd by making a contribution today.”
Until days ago, McCaskill was struggling to hold on to her seat. Now, thanks to a serious flub by her Republican opponent, McCaskill’s campaign has been revived. During a recent interview with a local St. Louis Fox TV station, Akin stated that pregnancies resulting from rape are rare, noting, “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut the whole thing down.”
A search on Twitter for “Akin,” which is trending at the moment on the site, turns up multiple Promoted Tweets from McCaskill’s campaign. The ads link to a donation page. Other search ads from McCaskill, like one spotted on Bing, call Akin “Anti-Women.”
Meanwhile, despite calls from the Republican Party for Akin to duck out of the race, his campaign is seeking donations via the Google ads.
