New data from Intelligent Positioning has revealed some interesting insights regarding the growing importance of mobile and tablet traffic and the declining power of desktop.
According to the research, which was based on an examination of 10 websites from a range of sectors across Intelligent Positioning’s extensive analytics data, UK traffic from mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, increased from 22.8% to 37% in 2013, with desktop declining from 77.3% to 62.9%.
The holidays had a strong influence on mobile traffic, with smartphone traffic peaking during the summer holiday period in August, and tablet usage spiking during time spent at home over December. This caused mobile traffic to spike at an increase of 140% during this time and desktop to slightly decline by -2%.
If the growth of mobile and tablet traffic share continues at its current rate, the experts at Intelligent Positioning are predicting it will finally overtake desktop by July 2014.
The impact of this data on brands is significant. Email marketing campaigns, mobile apps, social media and mobile-optimisation for websites will become of even more importance, as companies across the world seek to pique the interests of mobile consumers everywhere.

Interesting but… is the data for worldwide traffic, UK’s, US’…?
Hi there! Sorry for the confusion. I’ve just contacted the team at Intelligent Positioning, who confirm it’s based on data from UK traffic. I’ve added this to the article too.
Thanks very much
