Facebook has launched a new feature which highlights local sights, places of interest, and restaurant recommendations based the location of its users, using FourSquare and Yelp.
Facebook describes the service as follows:
“From friends’ recommendations to information about the places and things that interest you, Facebook helps you connect with the world around you.To better show you this content at just the right place and time, today we’re launching a new feature called place tips. Place tips will show you fun, useful and relevant info about the place you’re at.”
The tips will show up at the top newsfeeds, which link through to photos and information that friends or businesses have shared about that place. The tips only appear if you have given Facebook access to the location on your phone, and can be turned off altogether or for specific locations.
The feature is being rolled out in New York City, and if successful could be expand to all Facebook users.
