For those of you who have liked the hilarious satirical news source The Onion on Facebook, you will have also accidentally mistaken it for real news a couple of times. Now Facebook has stepped in, and is testing out a feature that marks fake news stories with a “satire” tag in its news feed, it has been confirmed to Mashable.
The tests have reportedly been going on for a month, and a variety of satirical sites are included in the program. An image captured by Ars Technica shows articles in the “related stories” field on Facebook’s news feed marked with a small, bracketed Satire tag.
The tags will be useful for sites that aren’t as well-known as The Onion. For example, the satirical-news blog The Daily Currant posted a piece on former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin joining Qatar-based Al Jazeer as a commentator. Hilariously, a Washington Post journalist read it as real news, and the newspaper had to post a correction on its website.
