Late last year, it was said that Instagram had overtaken Twitter in terms of active users. However, new data from the GlobalWebIndex (GWI) has taken a closer look at how the two sites compare in terms of membership, visitation and active usage.
GWI Social, which shows the latest figures surrounding social networking behaviours and engagement levels across 34 global markets, has shown that Twitter continues to be ahead of the photo-sharing site in the majority of the markets tracked (exceptions being Hong Kong, Taiwan and Sweden).
Promising figures
However, the good news for Instagram is that the gap is very narrow and is “close to drawing” even amongst 16-24 year olds.
Jason Mander, GWI head of trends, said in a blog post:
“That the photo-sharing service is so popular among the youngest internet users is extremely encouraging for its future growth prospects.”
In other news
The report revealed some other key social media findings, such as:
- Tumblr, Vine and Instagram have the youngest audiences, with 37-41 per cent of each of their active users from the 16-24 group.
- Facebook and LinkedIn have the oldest audiences.
- Pinterest and Instagram are the only networks to have an audience of more women than men.
- Across the world, Facebook is the top network for membership (80 per cent) and active usage (48 per cent).
