Sometimes it feels like there’s an uncomfortable age-shaped elephant in the digital marketing room.
The word digital evokes a youthful, trendy and hip image in the subconscious – not something often associated with the older generations. But why?
Recently we posted a story about Google expanding its UK-based educational programme to four additional markets. The Squared programme is designed to expand young professionals’ digital skillset, working to develop their leadership skills to shape the future leaders of digital.
However, the language of the piece caught the attention of one of our readers, Vivienne Kneale, a self-confessed ‘grey’ digital expert, who found that the article neglected the ‘mature’ sector and focused too much on young people in the industry.
Kneale, a creative content writer and social media consultant, is a proud Squared Student but feels forgotten by the wider industry – but has the industry forgotten her?
“There is a massive market within the ‘grey pound’ sector who want to be trained by people who are not ‘digital natives’ and who can combine the past with the contemporary,” she said.
“Anyone who thinks social is for the under 30s needs to review their ideas and sharpish.”
Here at .rising we want to find the answer. Do you think the digital world is ageist?

Squared is a programme specifically designed to upskill rising young talent in the industry who are able to spend six weeks out of their office. The online version of the programme has a more flexible format and is open to anyone interested in acquiring similar skills, regardless of age or any other demographic characteristic.
‘young talent’ hmnn – the carpet is pulled away in the first sentence……it’s these sub conscious slips that underpin the notion that ageism exists. Sorry, not nitpicking, but I did raise my eyebrows when I saw this:)
