Dealers no longer expect car shoppers to come to the lot with open, malleable minds. Most people know exactly what they want by the time they come a’knockin’.

Unable to beat the age of information empowerment, GM’s apparently joined it with its latest TV spots for Pontiac, which now contain the line “Don’t take our word for it. Google ‘Pontiac.'”

“We’re touting Google, frankly, because it stands for credibility and consumer empowerment, and we like the association,” GM sales and marketing chief Mark LaNeve told BusinessWeek.

Now if Google could only make Toyota go away…
