Samsung sensors to end "whoever smelt it dealt it" mystery

Samsung has unveiled that it's working on a sensor that can detect up to 20 smells in a drive to create an "internet of things" product range.

Samsung is developing smell-sensors in a drive to establish a product range in the ‘internet of things’ spirit.

BK Yoon, Samsung’s chief executive officer and president, has revealed that the electronics company is working on a sensor that can detect smells at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The sophisticated device would recognise 20 smells, said Yoon, and would be capable of distinguishing between non-toxic and toxic scents.

“We are developing advanced sensors that are precise enough to understand the surrounding environment to offer the right solutions or services,”  said Yoon in a recent interview.

The new tool would be ready for the market within five years, he claimed.

Samsung Electronics wants 90% of its products to be “internet of things-ready” by 2017, he continued.

Samsung also announced plans to invest more than $100m in internet of things developers and tech companies by the end of the year.
