The future of digital payments may be facial recognition technology

Alibaba recently demonstrated a facial recognition option called 'Smile to Pay' that would let shoppers pay for purchases on their smartphones by scanning their faces.

Thanks to Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, we will probably be able to make payments using facial recognition technology. The company recently demonstrated a facial recognition option called ‘Smile to Pay’ that would let shoppers pay for purchases on their smartphones by scanning their faces.

Whilst demonstrating the new feature during a presentation at CeBIT conference in Hanover, Germany on Sunday, Jack Ma, co-founder and chairman of Alibaba, announced: “Online payment to buy things is always a big headache…Today we show you a new technology in the future of how people can buy things online.”

A rep for Alibaba told Mashable the feature is “still in development” with no firm launch date.
