"When Instagram launched nearly five years ago, 400 million seemed like a distant dream," the social networking service said in a blog post.
Following the announcement earlier this month that advertisers big and small are now able to run campaigns on the photo-sharing social networking site, Instagram has revealed that its community has expanded to over 400 million.
In a recent blog post, the Instagram team focussed on how this new figure reflects the power of visual communication.
“While milestones like this are important, what really excites us is the way that visual communication makes the world feel a little bit smaller to every one of us,” the post said.
They added that, when the service launched almost half a decade ago, 400 million seemed like a “distant dream”.
“Now, we continue to strive to improve Instagram – helping you experience the world through images and connect with others through shared passions,” it said.
The Instagram community has not only expanded, but also evolved to become more global.
Currently, over 75 per cent of its community live outside of the US. Furthermore, of the last 100 million to join the site, over half live in Europe and Asia.
Brazil, Japan and Indonesia are the countries to have added the most Instagrammers.
Within the same blog post, Instagram also celebrated the fact that a few recognisable names are amongst those to have recently opened an account.
These include: “David Beckham from the UK, Caitlyn Jenner from the US, Indonesia’s Raffi and Nagita, German soccer player Toni Kroos and South Korea’s T.O.P”.
Over 80 million photos are shared per day on Instagram, and recently there have been a number of notable snaps.
Instagram cited the following “inspiring moments” as examples:
The first surface image of Pluto
Champions League Celebrations
