In an effort to reach the growing digital-savvy Latino population in the U.S., digital media company VOY LLC has launched VOY TV as a broadband television network targeted at English-speaking Latinos.
VOY TV is the latest addition to an online community hub called VOY Plaza, which caters to 2.6 million Latino users, according to the company, and also offers music and blogging features. By adding video, including user-created content, focused on topics about the Latino community, VOY Chairman and CEO Fernando Espuelas intends to reach out to keep the site’s audience in touch with their roots.
“The Hispanic market is growing quickly in the U.S., but it’s bifurcated between the historical market of those who immigrated to the U.S. and the native birth Latinos in the U.S.,” he said. “Fifty three percent of Latinos don’t speak Spanish, but there is an overwhelming desire to maintain an identity and community to the culture.”
Initial programming for VOY TV is slated to include news magazines, celebrity gossip shows, filmmaker showcases and “LatinoCam,” allowing VOY members to act as virtual reporters for news and current affairs, according to the company.
