Trustev researched the top 50 online retailers (as identified by Internet Retailer) to determine which offer same day or next day delivery on orders of single items between $50 and $75.
Of the companies that do, they compared the cost for next day delivery and the cut off time for placing orders.
Not all companies listed a cut off time for placing orders to receive your order the following day, but of those that did, the median time was 2pm.
There are just 2 companies (4%) out of the top 50 e-tailers who offer same day delivery via their standard store checkout process: Amazon (Prime (select items) and Prime Now) and 1800-Flowers.
This same day delivery is a huge part of their business model and is a free offering. Only 48% offer next day delivery but this comes at a high price; the average cost is $22.38.
This illustrates the caution retailers exercise when transacting online as they wait for authorisation of the purchase or manually review the transaction – both time-consuming processes – and points to a significant competitive advantage for Amazon.
“There are some interesting reasons why retailers exercise caution when offering the same day/next day delivery option — specifically relating to the risk aversion many retailers exhibit by manually reviewing online transactions before authorization in an effort to reduce the risk of fraud”, said a spokeperson. “Overall, average revenues lost due to fraud among merchants over the course of a year increased 94% over 2014, to 1.32% of total revenues lost.”
