Yik Yak, which was officially launched in October 2013 by two recent graduates of Furman University in South Carolina, lets users anonymously post messages on an online bulletin board, restricted to a 1.5-mile radius. According to reports, the app has now raised $62 million in funding, giving it a valuation in the “low hundreds of millions of dollars.”
The funding and swelled valuation come after Facebook paid more than $22 billion for WhatsApp in February and Snapchat’s valuation has eclipsed $10 billion. Sequoia was an investor in WhatsApp, earning more than $3 billion off a $60 million investment, according to the report.
Yik Yak has caused some controversy since its conception, because of its anonymous nature. There have been reports of bullying and threatening language. Furthermore, Douglas Warstler, a former classmate of Droll and Buffington, has filed a lawsuit claiming that he helped found the app.
