33% of social media users eschewing sites such as Facebook and Twitter

Despite being the largest social media sites around, new research from Kantar Media has revealed that more than a third of social media users in the UK don’t use Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram or Flickr.

A telephone survey that compiled data from 1003 Brits found that the rise of smaller niche social media sites, such as the controversial ask.fm, as well as the re-branding of older sites such as Myspace and Bebo, has meant that the larger social media sites are missing out on a number users.

Advertisers looking to take advantage of the potential consumers offered through social media sites may be interested to hear that, according to the survey, only 56% of respondents had a Facebook account, with 35% on YouTube, 26% on Twitter, 19% on Google+, 18% on LinkedIn, 13% on Instagram, 8% on Flickr a 6% on Pinterest.

Predictably, those aged between 18-24 years are most likely to have social media accounts, nearly all of whom (91%) have a Facebook profile.

The research also revealed that men were more likely to have an account on LinkedIn, YouTube and Twitter, with women more likely to have a Facebook or Pinterest account.
