UK Users Flocking to Sports Sites
More than 1 million people in the UK visited sports sites on the Internet in June of 2000, according to MMXI Europe, making sports sites a more popular choice than auction sites, hobbies, and career sites.

Since February, the sports category has grown from a 1.6 percent reach in February to a 9.9 percent in June. Not surprisingly, football (what Americans know as soccer) is a popular choice among Web sports fans in the UK. The sports category as a whole got a big traffic boost from the official site of the European Football Championship (Euro2000.org), which published news, rankings, and interviews, was available in six languages, and showed up in MMXI data for both the UK and France. Another football site, Teamtalk.com, was the most popular site in the MMXI Europe sports category in June.
“Football is an important part of our culture, and this is reflected in the Web habits of the people on our panel,” said Lucy Green, MMXI Europe’s Marketing Director. “The great attraction with the Internet is that it not only gives people the ability to see results and watch games as they happen, but also provides an encyclopedic source of information for true sports fans.”
In addition to football-oriented sites, the site of American wrestling outfit WWF (wwwfkingofthering.com), also shows up on MMXI Europe’s list. It has been popular with children age 2 to 14.
