UK Internet Users Pass 10 Million
The number of people online in the UK reached more than 10 million people for the first time in May 2000, according to MMXI Europe.

Men still make up the majority (51.6 percent) of the Web surfers in the UK, with women representing 36.6 percent, and kids aged 2 to 14 amounting to 11.8 percent. British men seem to show an interest in the Web sites of computer hardware and software retailers, investment sites, as well as entertainment and travel destinations.
British women are using the Internet to save time and as an information source for the families. Popular choices for women include the health advice site Netdoctor.co.uk, the UK government site from Department of Education and Employment, as well as Tesco.co.uk and Natwest.com. Kids in the UK spend their time visiting sites that reflect the latest fads — Pokemon.com and WWF.com — in addition to chatting to friends via messenger services such as Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger Service.
UK Internet users spend an average of five hours per month online. In terms of the ‘stickiest’ sites overall, people spend the most amount of time on AOL proprietary, surfing four hours per month. next comes ICQ, a chat service, which averages just over two and half hours per month. Yahoo Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, and MSN Messenger follow, proving that people spend the most time online communicating with each other.
“The UK Internet poulation is maturing, and with 10 million people now online, we are seeing how consumers are becoming more confident with their choice of sites, and how they spend their time on the Web,” said Mari Kim Coleman, UK Managing Director of MMXI Europe.
The Internet markets that have shown the most growth in terms of visitors since February include sports (225 percent), technology (82 percent), and hobbies/lifestyle (26 percent).
