Brits top global online spend forecast for 2015

Brits are expected to spend £52.25bn online this year, with shoppers tipped to spend £1,174 on average, topping the global league table.

Brits are expected to spend £52.25bn online this year, according to figures from RetailMeNot.

The rise in spend represents a 16.2% jump – up from £44.97bn to £52.25bn – compared to 2014.

The research, conducted by the Centre for Retail Research, reflects the sustained growth forecast in the global sector. European markets are expected to swell by 18.4%, with spend in the US and Canada forecast to grow by an equally healthy 13.2% in 2015.

On average, European online shoppers are expected to spend £820 in 2015, compared to £738 in 2014.

In comparison, Brits are tipped to spend £1,174 online in 2015, topping the global league table and outstripping the average online spend in the US (£1,120).

Giulio Montemagno, senior vice president of international at RetailMeNot, said: “Investment by retailers in improving the online shopping experience and in more sophisticated consumer targeting is clearly paying dividends.

“In the UK, consumers are now shopping online more frequently and spending more overall, helping to increase online retailers’ market share.

“This is being bolstered by a growing number of online shoppers; 65.5% of Brits now shop on the web.”
