The marks the decline of desktop dominance – with overall watch time rising by 50% every year thanks to the smartphone surge.

The milestone in traffic origin has meant that YouTube has had to investigate into alternative methods of extracting revenue from viewers as their behaviour shifts evermore towards mobile, admits Wojcicki.

Speaking at the US Code/Mobile conference she said: “YouTube right now is ad-supported, which is great because it has enabled us to scale to a billion users; but there’s going to be a point where people don’t want to see the ads.”
