Facebook is dishing out free Bluetooth devices to retailers in a bid to get their beacon devices off the ground.

Facebook is dishing out free Bluetooth devices to retailers in a bid to get their beacon device off the ground.

Place Tips gather useful information about a business or landmark – like posts from the business’ page, upcoming events and friends’ recommendations and check-ins—and show it at the top of News Feed to in-store visitors.

Each person’s Place Tips are unique.

At a restaurant, Place Tips can show the menu, reviews and frequently mentioned information about the establishment.

Facebook will send free beacons to firms that request them in the US – the social brand is yet to announce when their beacon offering will launch outside America.

Facebook told the BBC that companies would not yet be able to use the service to advertise, but that this position may change in the future.

The social network was also stressed that information sharing is “one way”.

“The beacons don’t collect any information from people or their phones or change the kind of location information Facebook receives,” the company explained.
